Senate Republicans rejected the demands of the Democrats to call new witnesses and documents in the impeachment trials.

In order for Trump to be removed from the Senate there would need to be a 2/3 vote to convict President Trump.

Votes

  • The 51-49 vote late Friday afternoon represented a major victory for Republican leadership
  • This represented that they wanted to get it over with as soon as possible.

The trials

  • The trial paused over the weekend and resumed Monday at 11.
  • This was four hours long of closing arguments.
  • After this they adjourn to give the senators time to speak on the floor before the vote on the impeachment on Wednesday at 4.

“America will remember this day, unfortunately, where the Senate did not live up to the responsibilities, where the Senate turned away from truth and went along with a sham trial,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) told reporters.

The White House lawyers and Republicans argued with the democrats about how they should’ve had all of their evidence when they met with the House of Democrats. It is too late now to show new evidence.
