Diet

  • Lions eat a wide variety of prey.
  • They vary from impalas, zebras, giraffe, and a lot more.
  • They can also attack elephants, and rhinos when food is scarce.

Population

  • Since the 1950's the lion population in Africa has decreased by half.
  • Today fewer than 21,000 still live in Africa.

Range

  • Lions now only live in the south Sahara Desert.
  • They also live in parts of southern and eastern Africa.

Body

  • Avg. Male weight 400 lb. 
  • Avg. Female weight 290 lb.
  • Their roar can be heard from
  • 5 miles away

Life Span

  • Males live on average 12 years
  • Females live on average 15 years

Predators of the Lion

  • Man
  • Alligators 
  • Lion cubs are killed by hyenas, 
  • jackals, snakes, martial eagles, etc.

  • Unlike most cats, lions are very social
  • They live in groups of about 30 lions called prides
