BOO RADLEY

CHARACTER ANALYSIS BY: ROHAN MORAR

SYMBOL

I believe that Boo Radley is a mysterious character like a ghost, due to him being portrayed as a mysterious and unknown character. I also believe that the author, Harper Lee, wanted to symbolize Radley as a ghost, hence his nickname "Boo" Radley. Radley is unknown just like ghosts, and most people who believe in ghost believe that ghost are scary or bad. In the book Radley is portrayed in the beginning as an evil and bad kid, but only through rumors. But later on in the story we see Radley is a gentle and kind person due to his good actions.

Scout: "I was fairly sure Boo Radley was inside that house, but I couldn’t prove it, and felt it best to keep my mouth shut or I would be accused of believing in Hot Steams..." (Lee, 39)

Scout: "Boo Radley was dead and nothing would get me..." (Lee 40)

MISUNDERTOOD

I believe Radley is misunderstood a lot in the beginning of the book. Because Radley is misunderstood the people of Maycomb make up rumors about him. People spread nasty rumors about how Boo stabbed his father and how he is a monster, when really he is a nice and gentle person.

Jem: "Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained—if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time." (Lee, 13)

Scout: "Every night-sound I heard from my cot on the back porch was magnified three- fold; every scratch of feet on gravel was Boo Radley seeking revenge" (Lee, 57).

SHY

I believe that Radley is regarded as a shy character. He is a character that does not express his feelings often. The main reason for this is because he is contained in his house. By being alone Radley is very shy, but Radley still expresses his good feelings towards others like when escapes his home to put a blanket around Scout.

Jem:" “Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn’t know it when he put the blanket around you.”
"(Lee, 74)

Scout: "Boo Radley, who had not been out of the house in twenty-five years." (Lee, 195)

COLOR

GREY

I believe that the color grey best signifies Boo Radley. Grey show mystery and is a drab color. Like Radley is a mysterious person and I believe he is a bit drab due to him being contained in his house for over twenty years. In the book it said he whittled away all the furniture in his house, which means that he has been in the house with nothing to do but whittle furniture. The color grey signifies his assumed lifestyle of being contained in his house. And it is because he is a mysterious and drab person in everyone's eye's, which leads to the people of Maycomb spreading bad rumors. Because in the city of Maycomb the lifestyle is very friendly meaning that everyone knows each other, but because of Radley being contained he is branded as a monster when it is not true.

Miss Maudie: " “If he’s not he should be by now. The things that happen to people we never really know." (Lee, 46)

Scout: "Boo slowly whittled away all the furniture in the house." (Lee, 40)
