  • A particular place or position.
  • Can be used as absolute or relative location in geography.

HOW LOCATION HELPS US UNDERSTAND MORE OF SOUTH AMERICA.

  • Location helps when you would need to find the area of a country/continent.
  • Allows you to discuss places on earth in words people can understand.
  • Absolute location helps find the exact spot of the location while relative location deals with places around the location needed.

1. WHERE IS IT RELATIVE TO OTHER COUNTRIES?

  • South America is south west to Africa, Asia and Europe.
  • North and Central Americas are to the north of South America.
  • Australia is to the east of South America.
  • South America is to the north of Antartica.
  • Other than North and Central Americas you would have to travel by sea or air from other countries to get there.

2. HOW IS THE LOCATION SIGNIFICANT?

  • South America is a continent located in the Western Hemisphere, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a small portion of land in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • It is bordered on the West by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and East by the Atlantic Ocean.

2. HOW IS THE LOCATION SIGNIFICANT (CONTINUED)?

  • The geography of Western South America is dominated by the Andes mountains; in contrast of the eastern parts containing both high lands regions and large lowlands where rivers such as the Amazon, Parana, and Orinoco flow, mostly lying in the tropics.
  • The Caribbean Sea and North America lie to the North West. Including 12 sovereign states being Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

3. WHAT IS THE NORTHERNMOST POINT?

  • Punta Gallinas is the northernmost point of South America.
  • It is one of the best landscapes in Colombia.
  • Punta Gallinas is inhabited by hundreds of people, dating back to the Wayuu family.
  • Also can be called "Cape Gallinas" or "Cape Chicken."
  • Coordinates being 12.4578*N and 71.6656*W.

4. WHAT IS THE SOUTHERNMOST POINT?

  • Cape Horn is the southernmost point in South America.
  • Is also the southernmost of the Great Capes.
  • Is known for its dangers having: strong winds, large waves, heavy sea currents and huge icebergs; making Cape Horn a "sailor's graveyard."
  • Is in southern Chile and the coordinates are 55.9800*S and 67.2892*W.
  • Cape Horn is in the city of Tierra deal Fuego.

5. WHAT IS THE WESTERNMOST POINT?

  • Punta Pariñas is the westernmost point in South America.
  • It lies in Peru.
  • The coordinates are 4*40'58" south and 81*19'43" west.

6.WHAT IS THE EASTERNMOST POINT?

  • Ponta do Seixas is the easternmost point in South America.
  • It lies in Brazil.
  • Having coordinates of 7*9'19" south and 34*47'35" west.

7. HOW FAR IS IT FROM OXNARD? DIRECTION?

  • It is 5,106 miles.
  • To get to South America from Oxnard one must travel southeast towards Panama, and then south to arrive to the northern part of South America.

VOCABULARY

  • Wayuu Family- has up to 14 clans, one being Iguana: Puuroulepu meaning "for the birds", probably originating from La Guajira from early 1700s.
