What is close Reading?
Close reading is thoughtful, critical analysis of a text that focuses on significant details or patterns to develop a deep, precise understanding of the text’s form, craft, and meaning.

First Reading:
Determine what the text says.

(What's the big idea?)

Second Reading:
Figure out how the text works

(What elements work together to convey meaning?)

Third Reading:
Analyze the text

(What details, patterns, images, etc. help support the big idea?)

read closely . . .

  • What is going on in each of the following pictures?
  • What details help you infer the picture's story?
  • Look again, what new details do you see? How do these details help shape your ideas?
