What is close Reading?
Close reading is thoughtful, critical analysis of a text that focuses on significant details or patterns to develop a deep, precise understanding of the text’s form, craft, and meaning.
First Reading:
Determine what the text says.
(What's the big idea?)
Second Reading:
Figure out how the text works
(What elements work together to convey meaning?)
Third Reading:
Analyze the text
(What details, patterns, images, etc. help support the big idea?)
read closely . . .
- What is going on in each of the following pictures?
- What details help you infer the picture's story?
- Look again, what new details do you see? How do these details help shape your ideas?
