Responsive Scripture

Leader - Peter portrays the church as a living, spiritual temple, with Christ as the foundation and cornerstone and each believer as a stone.

People - As you come to him, the living Stone--rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him--
1 Peter 2:4 (NIV)

Leader - God wants us, his "holy priests," to offer ourselves as living and spiritual sacrifices—daily laying aside our own desires and following him, putting all our energy and resources at his disposal, and trusting him to guide us.

People - you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:5 (NIV)

Leader - What is the stone that really counts in the building of the church? Peter answers: Christ himself. Jesus Christ is called "the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.

People - For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
1 Peter 2:6 (NIV)

Leader - Some will stumble over Christ because they reject him or refuse to believe that he is who he says he is.

People - Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,
1 Peter 2:7 (NIV)

Leader - Psalm 118:22 says that "the stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone," the most important part of God's building, the church.

People - and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the message--which is also what they were destined for. 1 Peter 2:8 (NIV)

Leader - What is the stone that really counts in the building of the church? Peter answers: Christ himself.

People - But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

Leader - Remember that your value comes from being one of God's children, not from what you can achieve. You have worth because of what God does, not because of what you do. May God add a blessing to this reading of His Word!

Lord, I will lift mine eyes to the hills
Knowing my help is coming from You
Your peace, You give me in time of the storm
You are the source of my strength
You are the strength of my life
I lift my hands in total praise to you

I lift my hands in total praise to you
Amen
