An appositive is a noun or pronoun that identifies or explains the noun or pronoun that precedes or follows it.

An appositive phrase is made up of an appositive and all of its modifiers.

Can be "essential" or "nonessential".

Essential appositives are not separated by commas.

My cousin Jason broke the school record in the long jump.

Nonessential appositives give extra information not required for the sentence to make sense.

Olga, the younges competitor, took third place in the race.

Denver, a city at a high altitude, hosted an annual marathon.

The Mona Lisa a painting by DaVinci is a prize possession of the Louvre.
