One of the things we learn in Algebra 1 is how to graph.

We will be graphing equations. If you change one of the variables in an equation, it can affect the answer or the other variable. Graphs show how the variables affect each other in a visual way.

You have probably seen this type of graph before. Businesses use them to show their profit and losses over a time period. They can also use the information to predict future gains or losses.

Graphs can be used to compare two different equations. For example, let's say you a planning a rafting trip. (This scenario is not the one modeled in the picture.) The small rafts are cheaper but only hold up to 4 people. The larger raft costs a little more but can hold up to 8. How many people can you take before it becomes cheaper to take big rafts? You can graph the two equations on the same graph. The point at which the two lines cross is where the bigger boats become less expensive.

Graphs can show the magnitude of an earthquake or the frequency of earthquakes in an area.

Graphs can be used to create topographical maps by displaying the various elevations in an area.

Do you want to start a business online or be the next YouTube star? Graphs can show you how many hits your website or video gets over time. Are you trending?

How many photos are uploaded over time? Has your number of followers or likes increased? Graphs can make statistics easier to understand.

Do you want to help land the first man on Mars? Or is the military in your future? Knowing how to graph can help you make sure you hit your target.

There so many reasons to learn how to graph.
