Born an activist, died a leader, He was a Baptist minister and a social activist who played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950's to his assassination.
Martin Luther King Jr. fought for equality for African Americans, who were economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice through peaceful protests.
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” -Montgomery, Alabama, 1955 address. He drove the Montgomery Bus protest and the March on Washington, which helped create the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
Martin Luther King Jr. went on to win the Nobel Peace prize in 1964 and was featured as Time magazine's man of the year in 1964 (He was elected man of the year in 1963).
Why do we even celebrate Martin Luther King Jr on a national holiday?
Some say it's because he helped influence African Americans to fight for freedom. Some say it's because he helped inspire young kids to fulfill their life achievements. But I think it's because he led a revolution. He was a man who could speak against millions of people. He brought justice for every race, and ensured all the full rights for every child, every adult, and every elder. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here. He truly stood out and stood up for millions of people in a humiliating fashion at the time, and he deserves to be respect throughout America.
