WHAT IS THE DISEASE?

  • Celiac is a disease in which the person has an
  • allergy to gluten and the lining of their small
  • intestine is damaged. It's difficult for the body
  • to absorb nutrients like fat, calcium, iron,
  • and folate.

WHAT CAUSES CELIAC?

  • When someone with celiac consumes gluten,
  • their body forms antibodies that attack the intestinal lining.
  • This can cause inflammation in the small intestine.

SYMPTOMS

  • Symptoms include these after eating products containing gluten:
  • Pain, gas, diarrhea, painful stool, skin rash, missed periods
  • tingling of the leg, and ulcers of the mouth.

DIAGNOSIS/TESTING

  • Perform a physical examination of patient.
  • Perform a blood test to see if high levels of certain
  • antibodies are present.
  • Iron test.
  • Stool sample, and in some cases biopsies are done.

TREATMENT

  • The patient must live a gluten-free life.
  • Avoiding wheat, rye, barley, bread, and beer
  • containing wheat.
  • Small crumbs from a cutting board can trigger
  • small intestine damage.

LONG TERM EFFECTS

  • Can develop at any age.
  • Leads to type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis,
  • dermititis herpetiformis (itchy skin rash), anemia
  • osteoporosis, infertility, and miscarraige, neuroligcal conditions
  • Like epilepsy and migraines.
