PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Most know at least a few details of Egypt's grand pyramids and elaborate artwork, but how did such a complex civilization arise out of one of the harshest desert environments on the planet?
In other words, what allowed ancient Egypt civilization to rise and thrive out of an unforgiving environment?
A steady and available source of clean water is essential for any civilization to rise (form) and thrive (prosper).
and the Nile River provided just that to the people of ancient Egypt.

The Nile river allowed ancient Egypt to rise and thrive in the desert. What do we mean when we say rise and thrive?
Using the following text, what details did this student give to explain ancient Egypt's rise and then thriving civilization:
"The Nile river was essential for the Egyptians to rise because it was great for farming. things that made it great for farming was when it flooded but the reseeded it left a rich layer of silt. and once they started farming they got a stable food supply. also the Nile help create a stable food supply because it was full of fish and fruit trees would grow on its banks. once they had a stable food supply they could focus on jobs an once they had jobs they could focus on things like religion and astronomy."
Using the following text, what information would you add to explain why ancient Egypt "thrived," or in other words, why it was able to do great things despite being in a desert?
"None of the achievements of ancient Egypt's civilization would be possible without the Nile River. Along the Nile River there was a swath of fertile land. Crops could be grown on a 12 mile stretch of land that is next to the Nile River. The Nile could provide a lot to eat. Along it, it grew fruit trees. and fish swam in great numbered in it. It provided a thin rich brown layer of silt. This soil could grow many crops in it. "

From yesterday's conversation, it seems many of you agreed social structure brings order to society.
Another popular thought was that ancient Egyptian social structure didn't give enough power and privileged to the lower class.
Our discussion today will continue an examination of Egyptian society as it relates to power--what people can do.
Specifically, today's discussion centers around the roles of women and the power they had in ancient Egyptian society.
What were the rights and roles of women in ancient Egypt?
How do the rights and roles of women in ancient Egypt compare to women today?
