Ibn Batutta

1326 I Arrived in Cairo, Egypt

  • There were many hospitals, mosques, convents, and colleges
  • I stayed in Cairo for about one month
  • I noticed that there were many religious buildings in Cairo(mosques)
  • The hospitals in the area are also very interesting 
  • I visited many mosques they were very much to my liking 

1326–1328 The Hajj in Medina

  • I performed many rituals within Mecca, in the traditional clothing 
  • I took a year and a half to reach his destination of Mecca from my home
  • I stayed in Mecca for three weeks, meeting with many holy men 
  • I found inspiration after this trip, I want to be a scholar or judge

1332–1333 I reached Delhi, India, and became a judge.

  • I entered India through the high mountains of Afghanistan
  • In late 1334, I went to Delhi to seek employment
  • I was given a welcoming gift of 2,000 silver dinars when I arrived in Delhi
  • So I began working as a judge, in Delhi
  • The food was to my liking, we ate bread and lamb 

Marco Polo

1274 Marco Polo's Journey to China

  • My journey took about  three years, but he finally arrived in China.
  • I met the great Kublai Khan, the ruler of all of  China
  • I studied the Chinese  and learned to speak it well, as i was in China
  • I also loved the food in this region of the world, it was very interesting
  • I also got the chance to work for Kublai Khan, I ruled one of his cities

1298 I became a Prisoner of War

  • I joined the Venetian forces and was captured 
  •  In prison I  met a writer whom I told my stories 
  • This writer wrote my stories down on paper 
  • I was then released from prison in 1299 

1307 Rise to fame

  •  The book of my stories reached people around Europe
  • I opened up a new world to the people of Europe 
  • The Europeans were fascinated with china 
  • Many even copied my journey
