'An assessment functions formatively to the extent that evidence about student achievement is elicited, interpreted, and used by teachers or their peers to make decisions about the next steps in instruction.' (Dylan William, 2011)

Sorting student work is an enduring practice of student-centered coaching.

We can sort student work

  • Before the lesson [pre assessments, past classwork]
  • During the lesson [entrance tickets, warm ups, checks for understanding on white boards, Plickr, or Kahoot]
  • After the lesson [quizzes, exit tickets, classwork]

Sorting Student Work

  • Focuses on our students
  • Aligns current performance with expected performance
  • Is a streamlined process
