Kwame Alexander

  • Was born on August 21, 1968
  • He enjoyed playing basketball as a kid
  • He father was a publisher and his mother was an English teacher
  • Growing up Alexander never really cared for books

Young Adulthood

  • Alexander never wanted to be a writer or a publisher
  • In college he studied medicine at Virginia Tech
  • Poerty has always been a hobby of his.

  • After following some important advice of one of his professor Alexander started his own publishing company.
  • He published ten volumes of poetry and two picture books.

Purpose

  • Alexander set out inspire readers between the ages of 8 through 12 to foster a love of reading.

Awards

  • In 2015 Alexander was awarded the John Newbery Medal for his book The Crossover
  • He has also received the awards like The Coretta Scott King award and The Carnegie Medal.
  • He is also know for his philathrophy work in the US and in other countries.
