The Beginnings of Evangelism

Session 3

Why Witness?

• All Christians are called to be disciple-makers (Matt. 28:18-20).
• All Christians are called disciples and disciples share the gospel (Mark 1:17).
• All Christians are called to be Christ’s ambassadors (2 Cor. 5:20).
All Christians are commanded to warn about the coming judgment (Acts10:42).
All Christians who love Christ tell others about Christ (John 14:15).

Acknowledge Fear

Often time when sharing the gospel, people can feel hesitant because they feel ill-equipped to articulate and present a holistic view of the gospel. Some of these fears can include:

Fear of rejection or conflict
There is a fear that even when the gospel is articulated it will be received with hostility or apathy. Reject often feels like personal and conflict could even be tension or arguing among the two parties.

Fear of inadequacy
Often time people have not had sufficient training in how to effectively share the gospel. As a result, they are afraid of lacking knowledge and skills. So essentially, they fear not knowing what to say or how to say it.

Fear of losing credibility or respect
Especially those of high positions of power may be fearful of damaging their credibility or respect of their subordinates. Wanting to maintain proper boundaries, it is often intimidating to share with someone the gospel.

Fear of termination
Even worse than losing credibility might be the termination of one’s position. There are many time when people lose their job due to articulation of the gospel, therefore, when other people share they fear similar repercussions.

Refute Fear

The truth is that rejection and persecution are real parts of following Jesus.

The truth is that if you share the gospel, you can’t fail!

The truth is that we have Jesus’ authority to share the gospel, and the Holy Spirit is with us.

Pray
-bring the right people into your path
-boldness
-sensitivity and discernment
-holy spirit to speak through you
-open hearts
