I advocate both looking at differences and similarities in order to gain understanding of various perspectives.

  • There are many more
In our way of thinking, our cultural modes, we have no problem thinking on differences. We are able to make up differences quickly by observing them visually, culturally, and in music. . we hear and see profound differences (or they seem profound to us). In fact, we are not all that different. But, we feel a strong need to differentiate (be superior, be original, etc.)

I encourage you to suspend this occasionally in order to develop a capacity for seeing similarity in people and their cultural practices.

But what are we really speaking about???

Culture

We tend towards identification with all kinds of things. These things then become our version of "us." What do you identify with? Music? Ethnicity? Culture?

There are two types of authenticity:
1) True to self
2) True to group
Think about what is authentic music? Authentic Thai food? What about Canadian Chinese Cuisine?

What is culture? Comes from French "culture" -- to till the land, and from Latin "cultura" to care, to honour. What does it mean now

These are fluid, living and always changing, not static. Learn to consider these in our contextual studies. . .these affect perspective deeply.

In looking at musics of difference it's very important to think on ontologies.

Shakuhachi -- Ma, ichi on jobutsu
Native flute -- play the heart
Kora -- Holder of stories

Music Ontology
How does it exist with its world?

Other questions might be. . what is its function? What does it do? What does it produce? How does it fit in its world?

The difficult question is this -- What is the ontology of Western Classical Music in our world, at our school, in our lives now?

Consider this carefully and discuss briefly. MU100 students were extremely insightful with this topic.

Tutorial Assignment

  • Written -- Locate yourself in the world
  • Find a recording of music you identify with within your "cultural location" to share
  • Bring written page and recording (smart phone/computer) to tutorial on Friday

Today there is a real emphasis on seeing the world down religious lines, especially Christianity vs. Islam. 2 weeks!
