FACTS

  • Also know as the "Great Toe".
  • Sports you can get them in: Football,soccer,track,basketball,rugby and martial arts
  • Hallux sprain=turf toe
  • MOI-Forced flexion or extension can lead to ligaments sprain.

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration
  • Pain when moving the toe
  • Pain and tenderness in the toe
  • Inability to walk or run normally
  • Treatments would be PRICE method and taping and padding when RTP

RISK FACTORS

  • Stubbing your toe into something when walking barefoot or while wearing sandals.
  • Or landing awkwardly from a jump,causing a toe jam
  • Wearing inappropriate footwear for an activity
  • Poor condition of shoes

  • Diagnosis-X-Rays and MRI's
  • Grade 1-some microtearing
  • Grade 2-partial tearing of the ligament tissue/mild instability of the joint
  • Grade 3-severe or complete tearing of ligament tissue/significant instability of the joint.

PREVENTIONS

  • They can often not be prevented but however to reduce the risk of it happening wear stiff-soled athletic shoes when playing sports.
  • Proper treatment when it happens helps prevent long-term damage.
