SENIOR PROJECT/THE RITE OF SPRING

WHAT I LEARNED HERE AT BLACKFOOT HIGH SCHOOL.

Plus I will also identify my senior project, the rearranged score of Igor Stravinsky 's the rite of spring. When I first arrived at Blackfoot High School, I was introduced to the marching band here, when I came to the beginning week of marching band I thought I was in heaven. This was because the teacher Mrs. Jan Eddington had taught me that that we can all sound powerful as one, as a team. Our show that year,2011, was lets rach featuring music from Sergei Rachmaninov. This was my induction to the wider views of the band/music world. It taught me to have the honor and discipline to learn my craft.

My second trimester as a freshman, I was put into the symphonic band without even auditioning, my theory is that, I had transcribed thus Zarathustra, from the 2001 Odessy. That is what I think got me into symphonic band. But I did end up completing my audition over the 9 - 10 grade years in concert band. But from this my goal was to rewrite an orchestra score into a band score. And that is what I did.

My song that I had rewritten was Igor Stravinsky's score to a ballet; the rite of spring. And the movement is the fourth movement: spring rounds. During my the midway point of my sophomore year I went to a concert in Boise to go see a world premiere of Jim Cocky's tribute to the Shoshone-Bannock tribes. This was called the"sacred earth"
When the premiere of Jims symphony, that is when I heard Stravinsky's rite of spring. They said before they started, this ballet caused one of the worlds largest riots in the music world.

When I had first heard it, I fell in love with the wonderful, mysterious sound of the bassoon. That starting note was a revolution of sound in my ears, nothing could replace the sound that I heard that night. It was powerful. But to my surprise, when they came to the last movement in the score, I felt a mix of fear, anger, excitement, and most of all my air got knocked out of me. There were time signatures that I had never even heard of before that night. My idea for the score had been born that night. I had started on my idea for my senior project during my sophomore year.

I had heard some themes in the symphony that had sparked ideas in my mind, it's like when I first heard it, it's like the sound could not leave my mind, soul, and ears. I had did the last four movements of the first part for my junior year, but it had taken the whole year to put into my iPad music application. That when I had learned that it took Stravinsky From 1911 -1913 to complete the score. That has had me at aw. And inspiration to be a conductor , which got me to try out for the marching bands drum major. And being drum major. I had to learn to balance play time from work time, that part was very complex.

Here is a sample picture of my score. After I looked up more on the rite, I had found the real printed edition of the score, what I found out is that there were a lot of powerful moments in the ballet. Because when I read the score with the the music, I had seen so many different time signature changes, as well as tempo, dynamic changes. By reading this I had learned of the endless ideas that Stravinsky had gone trough to complete this project. But some have doubted my success with rearranging and having the bands ability to read my hand writing. have busted out of their negative words like Stravinsky, Nijinsky, dehagaliv did when they said it is to far ahead...

Of its time. I had busted through the gates of unsure thoughts of people. Completed the score, it took on a high that made me feel like i can accomplish anything., so I started writing more sheet music for band. So I have completed more scores and parts, a lot from the original orchestra score, so for me , I had relished that I have a high for writing music . I also attempted rewriting and except George Gershwin' s; porgy and bess, the introduction and summertime, but I could never find the right part to put them in.
