Thoreau is telling us to be ourselves and to live by our principles. We do not need to conform and sway like tall grass whenever the world brings an idea or people do things. He is attempting to tell us to live simply and find our most bottom self. Our core as one would say, to find our spiritual calling.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

FROM WHERE I LIVED, AND WHAT I LIVED FOR

“Let us spend one day as deliberately as Nature, and not be thrown off the track by every nutshell..."
Thoreau is telling us to be ourselves and to live by our principles. We do not need to conform and sway like tall grass whenever the world brings an idea or people do things. He is attempting to tell us to live simply and find our most bottom self. Our core as one would say, to find our spiritual calling.

FROM SOLITUDE

“Why should I feel lonely? Is not our planet in the Milky Way?”
Being in solitude and by ourselves is often misunderstood as something to be fearful of or seen as a sign of sorrow. On the contrary, Thoreau is saying it opens us up more than ever. We become closer to nature and see things in a different light. Maybe we are far from people, but we are in a world of beauty, we are in the presence of nature and it accompanies us. Nature is enough itself, we do not need the company and restriction of society and government.

FROM THE POND IN WINTER

“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads. . . . ”
Often we can get caught up in things such as religion and think too much of the future and forget what is in front of us. Thoreau says we are in a heaven as of right now. We live on this marvelous plain called earth and should admire it while we are here. We need to live more in the now and enjoy what is in front of us, nature, instead of living only for what is ahead and being blind to what is around us.

FROM SPRING

“The change from storm and winter to serene and mild weather... is a memorable crisis which all things proclaim.”
Thoreau is talking about how spring brings new life. It's like a cycle and there is always hope at the end. Nature brings new life it also reflects how humans can change. How humans can change emotions from anger to forgiveness and grace just as the seasons change.

FROM CONCLUSION

" If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer."
It is true that success and maturity are important and something we should strive for, but it should be done at our own pace. Sometimes we see people around us driving forward and reaching new things and because of this think we have to keep pace with them, almost making it a competition. Thoreau says it perfectly, "perhaps he hears a different drummer". Not everyone has to take the same path to go places. I believe his main message is to find that talent, interest or spiritual calling and go where you believe it can take you. You do not have to conform because society tells you to. You do not have to bind yourself, limit yourself to invaluable standards.
