Let us talk to the author
"Stop trying so hard to be them Cornelius. They are great in their own way. You are great in yours." p. xiii
Do we allow students to be who they are..or do we expect them to be who we think school children/youth should be? Explain.
Do you listen like this youth intends to do?
"We are asked to be "them" when our responses to children are dictated by what the curriculum allows as opposed to what kids need." (xiii) Explain.
The problem with this (hero) narrative is that it erases the complicated calculus of becoming and being a hero, a leader, a change agent, a teacher. (p 3)."
What is wrong with the hero story?
Can you teach diversity to younger children?
"The ability to listen will not make teaching easier. It will not take the painful parts away, but listening can give us our children back (p. 11)." Explain
"Standing for children is the most powerful thing a human can do, but it is never easy (p. 24)." Explain.
