Pressures from both consumption culture and Islamic values manifest themselves in anxieties about jilbab fashion. And while these anxieties allow women to craft their own “simple” styles, the aforementioned structural forces place the burden of this balancing act disproportionately on women and the same “simple” styles these individuals hail as representations of themselves become the premise for others to criticize them.
