ADAMS PRESIDENCY, DOMESTIC ISSUES

  • The alien and sedition acts were a domestic issue while Adams was president. They said that any "disloyal" immigrant could be deported or arrested. "Disloyal" had no further explanation so it was up to interpretation by the individual. Also said there could be no critical speech against the government which goes against the freedom of speech amendment.

  • A foreign issue while Adams was president was the xyz affair. Agents of the prime minister of France demanded a bribe from the U.S. To speak to him. Also that the U.S. Gives France a loan and apologies for anti-French comments the U.S. Has made. Adams didn't respond well when he heard this happen and said "millions for defense, not one cent for tribute" after that he canceled any previous treaties.
