Flourishing Stories - a proposed approach to capture different perspectives of inspiration, excellence and innovation at City of Glasgow College.

Why Stories?

• People are able to provide rich answers to questions seeking “data” about success in their own “systems” (work, groups, organisations, etc.).
• Information that comes through personal narratives and stories is generally richer, and more accurate, than merely listing numbers, for example.
• Through stories, strengths, values, and resources emerge, but more naturally. Most people in most cultures are also comfortable with stories – story telling is part of most cultures.
• The very act of asking and answering questions begins to shift the system in the direction of the questions being asked – our questions can be “fateful”.
• Collective surfacing of memory invites multiple forms or innovation, not necessary possible with more linear thinking.
• Stories have depth and breadth that allows more to be conveyed than just a list of numbers or statistical achievements.
• Stories engage the imagination in ways analytical discussions cannot.
• Telling and listening to stories stimulates excitement and delight!

WHAT’S THE STORY?

The intention would be to capture stories of the BEST OF the past and present and use these to shape the future of the College.

Nearly every significant accomplishment by the College has resulted from collaboration and the positive energy and learning created from people working within teams.

It is proposed to use affirmative questioning to invite people to share generative stories of moments when they or their teams were at their very best.

These stories will serve as the basis for analysis and DISCOVERY of the core success factors that are alive within the College repertoire.

With these discoveries in hand conversations can shift toward DREAMING about an ideal future and then DESIGNING and implementing ways to continuously move toward the ideal DESTINY.

INSPIRATION

When we tap into our passions we become fuelled to receive power to move beyond our present reality with determination and commitment to do whatever it takes.
Winning teams, too, are impelled to perform by the driving force of inspiration.

Questions:

1. Describe a time in your work at the college when your passion was ignited and you were inspired to move out of neutral, get into gear and moved towards a goal.

- what was the situation?
- who was involved?
- what was the driving force behind the movement? Specifically, what role did you, your team, or the work of the team play in helping you to move?

2. As you look towards this organisation’s future, what images or possibilities most excite you? How does this excitement propel you to act in service of others and the whole?

EXCELLENCE

Indicative Questions

The College purpose is to let learning flourish. Think of the best field project or initiative that you know of that has translated purpose to practice. Tell the story of that project. Where is it? How did it develop? What did you, others, and the College do to make it possible?

Thinking back on the past year describe a peak experience or high point in your experience of working at the College, a time when you achieved something outstanding or excellent
Relating to the work that you were doing.

What were all the conditions and circumstances that contributed to that experience (e.g. you, others, the task, process, leadership)


Three Wishes
If you could develop or transform the College in any way, what three wishes, in order of priority, would you make to heighten overall excellence?

What are the future possibilities for excellence at our College?
What are you willing to contribute to?

INNOVATION

Indicative Questions

Innovation, which is necessary for business success, does not occur without risk-taking. People take risks because they believe in the possibilities in the unknown. Warren Buffet, Thomas Edison, and Rosa Parks all took risks and they are known for their successes. Will you please describe a time when you felt inspired to take a risk?
• What made you want to take the risk?
• What made you comfortable taking the risk?
• What was the best you believed could happen?
• How did it feel?
• What did you learn?
• What gave you the confidence to persevere?
• How did that experience affect how you took risks afterward?


If our INNOVATION success was completely guaranteed, what bold steps might we choose?
• How can we support each other in taking the next steps? What unique contribution can we each make to innovation at the College?
• What challenges might come our way and how might we meet them?
