TYPES OF POETRY

Couplet
Couplets are two lines of poetry that rhyme. They are usually made up of the same number of syllables and have a recognizable rhythm.

Couplet example:

Line one:
I got on my red sled and rode down the slick hill, (A)
Line two:
I screamed with excitement , it was such a great thrill. (A)

Quatrain
Quatrains are four-line poems that follow different rhyme patterns. For example, AABB, ABBA, ABAB, or ABCB. These patterns refer to the last word in each line.

Quatrain example
Line one:
I love to go shopping at the local mall; A
Line two:
It's fun to search for items big and small. A
Line three:
When I find what I'm looking for I'm so glad; B
Line four:
"Thank goodness, that took forever!" said my dad. B

Concrete

Concrete poems describe a specific object. The poem is written in the shape of the object being described.

Concrete example:
Crunchy brown bread crust forms the top. The sizzling cheese burns when it touches my awaiting, salivating tongue-
Juicy pepperoni, spicy sausage, and hot peppers cover the slice-I can't wait to take my first bite-

Limerick example:
There once was a man named Stan; A
He saw a spider and ran. A
He said goodbye B
While trying not to cry, B
Stan suffers from arachnophobia, man. A

ACROSTIC
In an acrostic poem, the letters of the topic/subject are written vertically.
Next to each letter, a statement is written horizontally about the topic/subject.

ACROSTIC EXAMPLE

• Starting on the blocks
• Waiting for the gun to go off
• Into the water I dive
• Make my arms reach far
• Super day for first place!

Lantern
Line 1 one syllable noun (topic)
Line 2 two syllables describing the topic
Line 3 three syllables
Line 4 four syllables
Line 5 a one syllable noun that's a synonym for the topic

Haiku
Haiku is a form of ancient Japanese poetry. It is a three-line poem about something related to nature.
Line 1: 5 syllables
Line 2: 7 syllables
Line 3: 5 syllables

Haiku example:

The roses opened
Kisses awake by the sunlight
Beauty to behold

Diamante
A Diamanté is a seven line poem in the shape of a diamond.
line 1 choose a topic that is a noun-1 word
Line 2- 2 adj to describe the topic
Line 3-3 action words ending in -ING that relate to the topic
Line 4-4 nouns related to topic or a 4 word phrase about topic
Line 5-3 action words ending in -ING that relate to a topic
Line 6- 2 adj to describe the topic
Line 7-a synonym for the topic-1 word

Jewels
Colorful, bright
Glittering,shining, sparkling
Sapphire, diamond, ruby, emerald

Cinquain
A cinquain is a five-line poem.
Line 1 choose a topic that is a noun-1 word
Line 2 2 adj to describe the topic
Line 3 3 action words ending in -ING that relate to the topic
Line 4 4 nouns related to topic or a 4 word phrase about topic
Line 5 a synonym for the topic-1word
