WHERE AND HOW

  • There are lots of dams in Minnesota from leach lake to Rapidan
  • A lot of Dams in Minnesota are used for hydro power, flood control and lake Level control.

LAWS AND REGULATIONS

  • The top of the dam must have appropriate freeboard above the design flood elevation. The spillway must be able to pass the discharge at a safe high to alleviate erosion.

IMPACTS

  • The dams can destroy habitats for wildlife and it can stop fish and other aquatic species from migrating up stream.
  • Altering flow rates may negatively impact aquatic organisms that depend on thresholds of water level.

AFFECTS

  • The Dam can give electricity and can prevent flooding.
  • The dams can slow down fishing what a lot of people in Minnesota like to do.
  • If they need to release too much water if might flood farm land.

RECENT NEWS

  • Minnesota is ranked No. 3 among the 50 states this year for dam removals.
  • A 52-year-old man died after he was pulled into the fast water near the lock and dam system on the Mississippi River in southeastern Minnesota.
