BENEFITS
It's a clean fuel source.
Wind is a domestic source of energy.
It's sustainable.
Wind power is cost-effective.
Wind turbines can be built on existing farms or ranches.
Wind farm construction creates jobs.

CHALLENGES
Wind power must still compete with past generation sources on a cost basis.
Good wind sites are often located in remote locations, far from cities where the electricity is needed.
Wind resource development might not be the most profitable use of the land.
Turbines might cause noise and aesthetic pollution.
Turbine blades could damage local wildlife.

WHILST IN VICTORIA
Victoria currently has approximately 949MW of operating wind power generation.
Victoria has a significant number of areas where favourable wind conditions exist and possible future wind energy farm production.
Planning permits exist for almost 400 wind turbines in Victoria which are yet to be constructed.
Victoria has world-class wind resources and technology, as well as it being widely used around the world to provide reliable supplies of energy.

OVERALL
The Government has produced the policy and planning guidelines for the development of wind energy facilities in Australia.
The Renewable Energy Target (RET) requires that 20 per cent of Australia’s electricity be produced from renewable energy sources by 2020.
