Fundamentalism : Movement based on literal interpretation of Bible
Historical Significance(H.S.) - it lead to the creation of the Butler Act and made it illegal to teach evolution
Speakeasy : Illegal hidden bars and nightclubs that sold alcohol
H.S. - the more speakeasies there were, the most live entertainment needed which means more jazz music circulating the 1920s
WPA : New deal program that hired writers, artists, and actors
H.S. - it provided more relief to the unemployed by providing jobs and increase income
SEC: New Deal program that was created to regulate the stock market and prevent fraud
H.S. - it restored investor confidence which allowed more money in stocks
National Origins Act : Act that limited immigration to 2% of the total number of people in any ethnic group already living in the US
H.S. - it reveals the racism that is still very apparent in the US towards immigration
Harlem Renaissance: 1920s African American movement that stimulated artistic development, racial pride, etc.
H.S. - first time African American literature and arts attracted a significant amount of attention
Dust Bowl: a severe drought gripped the Great Plains in the early 1930s, Wind scattered the topsoil, exposing sand and grit
H.S. - killed important crops, caused ecological harm, increased poverty for farmers and settlers
Ku Klux Klan : Racist white supremacist group that increased to 4 million members nation-wide in the 20's due to the anti-immigration sentiment
H.S. - it increased brutality towards immigrants and anyone who had "un-American" values
Flappers : A woman of the 20's who drank, smoked, and loved to dance
H.S. - these women pushed barriers in economic, political, and sexual freedom for women
Stock Market Crash : 1929 event that signaled the beginning of the Great Depression. Some investors lost all their money that they had invested in stocks.
H.S. - it accelerated the global economic collapse with high unemployment rates, loss of homes, etc.
Hawley Smoot Tariff : In 1930, Congress passed the toughest tariff in US history. Countries responded by enacted their own tariffs and world trade fell 40%.
H.S. - Global trade plummeted and was the second highest tax in US history
New Deal : FDR's collection of programs to provide relief, recovery, and reform during the 1930's
H.S. - improved the lives of people suffering from the Great Depression but also skyrocketed our debts millions to hundreds of millions
John T Scopes : Biology teacher who went against the Butler Act, was arrested and found guilty of teaching evolution.
H.S. - he was the first teacher to defy the law and taught evolution
Herbert Hoover : President at the start of the Great Depression. Created the Reconstruction Finance Corp but few other programs to assist people. Did not believe in direct relief.
H.S. - He signed the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1929 to address an ongoing farm crisis.
Franklin D Roosevelt : created the New Deal programs, criticized for deficit spending and court packing plan.
H.S. - He created programs providing relief
to the unemployed and farmers.
Langston Hughes : Harlem Renaissance poet who wrote "Dreams Deferred". One of the most famous Harlem writers. H.S. - He showed the joys and hardships of the working-class black lives in his writing.
Zora Neale Hurston : Harlem Renaissance Female Writer. African American women were often her main characters.
H.S. - She played a huge role in protecting African American rights.
Marcus Garvey : Originally from Jamaica; started the "Back to Africa" Movement, promoted separatism & Black pride
H.S. - He advanced Pan-African philosophy that inspired a mass movement, Garveyism.
Claude McKay : Harlem Renaissance poet who wrote about racial pride and
discrimination.
Originally from Jamaica.
H.S. - He paved the way for black poets to discuss the racism they faced in their poems.
Eleanor Roosevelt : Outspoken first lady, a strong advocate of Civil Rights, helping the poor, and stood up for what she believed in.
H.S. - She advocated for the civil rights of African and Asian Americans, etc.
