PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ORGANELLES AS A BUSINESS

Kit Radley & Beverly Rosas

CYTOPLASM

Holds all cellular contents outside the nucleus
cytoplasm contains the organelles like how the inside of a building contains the offices

CELL MEMBRANE

Regulates what enters & leaves the cell/protects & supports the cell
Cell membrane protects and supports the cell like how the outside skeleton of the building protects the offices

RIBOSOMES

Site of protein synthesis
Makes & changes the proteins like how some workers make & modify the product they sell

NUCLEUS

Contains the cell's DNA and coded instructions for making molecules
Tells the entire cell what to do like how the manager or "boss" tells the workers how to do their jobs

MITOCHONDRIA

Converts chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are easier to use
Converts food into usable energy like how a treasurer of a company can convert the money into product that the company can sell

NULCLEOLUS

Where the assembly of ribosomes begin
Begins the assembly or ribosomes like how a business can order the essential ingredients to make the product they sell

CELL WALL

Strong supporting layer around the cell membrane
Supports and protects the cell like how a gate around a business building can support and protect the business from outside threats
Only some cells have cell walls like only some buildings have gates

SMOOTH ER

Contains collections of enzymes that perform specialized tasks
Has a specific job like a security guard and how their only job is to ensure the building's security

ROUGH ER

Chemically modifies the proteins
Chemically modifies proteins like how some workers put the finishing touches on their products before they are shipped

GOLGI APPARATUS

Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins & other materials
Sorts and packages proteins like how the warehouse of a business sorts, packages, & ships the products they make

LYSOSOMES

Breaks down lipids, carbohydrates, & proteins into small molecules
Cleans out old parts of the cell like a janitor cleaning out the trash in a building

VESICLES

Stores & moves materials between cell organelles
Store and move materials within the cell like how an assistant that moves paperwork and files them into the correct location

CENTRAL VACUOLE

Stores materials like water, salt, proteins, & carbohydrates
Stores materials like how the file cabinets at an office store all main documents

CHLOROPLASTS

Captures energy from sunlight and converts it into food
Converts sunlight to food like how solar electricity in a building converts the sun's energy into usable electricity for the building
Not found in all cells like how solar power is not found in every business building

FLAGELLA

Helps move the cell
Helps move the cell like how cars & trucks move the workers & products in & out of the business building

CYTOSKELETON

Gives cell shape and internal organization/ involved in movement
It supports the internal structures of the cell like how pillars and columns hold up the inside of an office building
