Theodora of the Byzantine Empire by Nicole Dworaczyk

Theodora of the Byzantine Empire was born in 497 AD and died in 548 AD on June 28 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Early Life

  • Her father was a bear keeper at a circus.
  • Her parents had two other daughters.
  • When she was 4 or 5, her father died unexpectedly.
  • When Theodora was 12, she helped her sister on stage and became a mime.

For Theodora, her life was very hard. Her father died when she was young, and her mother was rarely around. She became an actress and got married twice.

Theodora's education was mainly working in the circus when she was around 12. She grew up very poor and couldn't pay for an education.

Accomplishments

  • Many people called her the Star of the Circus.
  • She was one of the most influential woman of her time.
  • She is one of the most powerful woman in Byzantine history.

Theodora is very important in the Byzantine history. She influenced her husband Justinian I to do the right thing. She also created laws for Byzantine.

Interesting facts.

  • She was said to have had 2 children at the age of 16.
  • She had an education when she was much older.
  • She was very poor and then she married Justinian I and became a queen.
