PILLAR ONE, SHAHADAH

  • A statement of faith
  • The people say "There is no god but God, and Muhammad is his prophet"
  • It must be said at once in their lifetime, as a statement of faith to Allah
  • The people also say it in their daily prayers

PILLAR TWO, SALAT

  • The Islamic people pray each day.
  • They pray 5 times each day.
  • They pray at sunrise, midday, evening, after sundown, and before bed
  • Each time, people are called to the mosque for an invite to pray

PILLAR THREE, ZAKAT

  • The Islamic people give to the poor every year.
  • People give some of their money to a religious offical.
  • The religious offical then gives it to the poor.
  • The money is used for paying debts or building mosques.
  • Mosques are places of worship

PILLAR FOUR, SAWM

  • The people fast during the month of Ramadan
  • The people cannot eat anything from dawn to sunset
  • Fasting reminds them of the struggle for food in the world
  • Fasting is to show that Allah is more important than the body

PILLAR FIVE, HAJJ

  • The Islamic people travel to Mecca at least once in their lifetime
  • This journey is called a Hajj
  • The people throw stones at a pillar, because it represents the devil
  • It is a religious journey, done by all islamists, and some africans
