  • Subclinical infections

SYMPTOMS

  • Headache
  • Discomfort
  • Redthroat
  • Slight fever
  • Sore throat

Diagnosis
Polio can be diagnosed by a spinal tap, throat secretion sample, or cerebrospinal fluid

How common?
Polio is said to be eradicated because of vaccination at a young age

CAUSES

  • It is not genetic.
  • Can be passed diwn through pregnancy

WHATS WRONG

  • Attacks specific neurons in brain stem and spinal cord
  • Effects muscle controlling nerves.
  • Can damage of destroy motor nerves.

TREATMENT

  • Antibiotics
  • Moist heat
  • Pain killers
  • Physical therapy

HOW TREATMENT WORKS

  • Use antibiotics to treat UTI
  • Heat to reduce muscle pain & spasms
  • Reduce pain in body & headache
  • PT for recovery

PATIENT

  • Have to use crutches or braces
  • Wheelchair or ventilators
  • Identified as "disabled"
  • Young patients may be confused or afraid
  • May not trust doctors or medical treatment

  • Push themselves to gain mobility
  • Encouraged to give up clutches if able.

  • Encourage patient which can add stress for patient
  • Caregiver can become depressed.
  • Family may do counseling
  • Some family and friends may choose to seperate bc of fear that they may contract it
