NOMADIC EMPIRES AND EURASIAN INTEGRATION

TRADE

  • Turkish military expansion including that of the Seljuks.
  • Their culture emphasized on horses
  • Horse breeding animal herding and horse riding
  • Produced pottery, leather goods, iron weapons, and tools
  • They had yurts or large tents for housing

MILITARY

  • Turkish people entered Persia, Anatolia, and India
  • Mid 8-10th century they lived mostly on the borders of Abbasid realms (lots of trading)
  • 10th century the Saljuq Turks served in the Abbasid army and lived there
  • In 1055 the Saljuq leader Tughril Beg and his ancestors ruled from Turkish to Syria, Palestine, and other parts of the country.

POWER

  • Khan broke up tribes and men were being enlisted for the military with no choice
  • He chose military and political officials based in their loyalty and talents
  • He built Karakorum (a palace) representing Mongol superior
  • His goals were to create a strong mongol state with peace between the clans and tribes

KUBLAI CLAN

  • Promoted Buddhism and support for Daoists, Muslims, and Christians
  • Extended Mongol rule to all of China
  • 1279 made himself emperor and established the Yuan Dynasty
  • Made many attacks in Southeast Asia but failed
