There Is a Gap

Between....
We are all traveling down this superhighway of information and expected to become experts in Emergency Medicine, and yet we have not expertly harnessed all the tools we need to achieve this goal.

How We Live

And interact with technology in our personal lives
Information technology has all changed our personal lives, and allows us to bring the world to us in ways never before possible.

Unfortunately that level of personal technology use has been slow to translate into our personal and collective learning styles.

We expect our flow of information to be accessible, engaging, efficient, focused on our interests and needs.

How We Learn

We also know that mindless repetition, massed learning, cramming, and passive learning styles are not enough to master the vast knowledge base of Emergency Medicine

Spaced learning, interactive and varied types of learning, an interleaved content of different types all impact how well we learn and retain knowledge.

How We Teach

AND
We have come a long way but theres is still much we can do to improve how we teach so that we are embodying the best principles of what makes for quality learning. When we do come together it is often for one of these. We KNOW this is NOT the way to engage our minds.

Piling it on

No More
This is no way to learn and retain knowledge.

Come Late And Start Sleeping

No More Passive Learning (CLASS)
No more of this please....

The Design Challenge

Building EM education for the 21st Century
Thinking of your education as s design challenge just makes sense. See where the barriers to your education are, look for tools to help you overcome them, customize them to your own needs, and if there isn't a good one then design one that works.

Design thinking is a business world concept meant to challenge you to think of the barriers to your learning as nothing more than a failure of design. To encourage you to think like an engineer or architect and to imagine solutions so that you can build a better mousetrap...

Barriers

Overcoming
The EM core content design challenge is about overcoming barriers to your training and using innovative 21st century concepts and tools to do it.

Engaging

Bite Sized

A tasty morsel of learning goodness
Ever wonder why our Program Director keeps a bowl of candy just inside his door? Once your in some of the best educational interactions of your career will happen in that room in less than five minutes.

Relevant

Learner Focused NOT Expert Driven
Experts don't always make good teachers. Focus your expertise on translating your knowledge to others, make it relevant to them. Give them the confidence that they can take the knowledge you give them and USE it.

Efficient

What you can teach in six seconds?
The Zen of teaching. Don't cram, edit. Think of what is of most value and teach it.

Can you teach something in six seconds? Some have tried and succeeded!!!

Is Valuable

Our Time Together
Residency goes by quickly. Our personal time is valuable, the times we gather in person are even more valuable. Techniques like flipping the classroom by using online learning are key to avoiding lectures that cram in information you could get from a textbook.

Designing online educational content that allows educators and learners to flip the classroom is another tool for high quality learning.

Community

And We're all in this learning thing together
We are all here at this place in this time because we share a common passion for Emergency Medicine. If we are not sharing the journey then why are we here? Using 21st century tools can strengthen our community and our network of mentors and learners.

New Tools

We are introducing you to some new (and some familiar) tools that have the potential to fulfill all the requirements of our design challenge. These tools are not the focus, your creativity is. You are the architects, design the kind of education in Emergency Medicine that you want for yourselves.

We will also teach you some new concepts associated with these tools. How to join, follow, share, curate, and create.

Use New Tools to
Share your knowledge with the community.

You Can Make These

(Yes, the one I'm using now)

Or These

Or Any of These

If you have mad skills using another platform then teach us something! The only requirement is you have to create a link to your work so that is can be accessible and shared online.
