Or Mary Musgrove

She was born around 1700

She was a Creek Indian Princess.

  • Because her mother was a Creek woman of royal blood.
  • Her father was English.

She first lived in Coweta.
It is near present day Macon. This is when she learned Muskogee.

In 1707 she moved to Charles Town

to live with her father - this was when she was named Mary.

Her father was a trader.

She learned English and about English settlers.

She learned about deerskin trade firsthand.

That will help her later in her life.

In 1717 she started a trading post

with her husband near the Savannah River.

In 1739 she meets James Oglethorpe. He was one of the founders of the colony of Georgia.

She became Oglethorpe's interpreter and she got a salary of:

100 pounds per year!!

She helped to found Savannah!
She was Oglethorpe's interpreter when he worked with Tomochichi to build a settlement.

Later the Creek Indians gave her 3 islands and the colony of GA didn't like that at all because they thought that land should not be given to one person.

When the Governor did not support her:

  • She fought in court for her claims for 10 years
  • Then she won St. Catherine's Island

Then she died on her Island.She was and is a hero for helping make our State what it is now
