Darwin's controbutions

Charles Darwin's controbutions changed the way we look at life today.

He showed us evolution and how the world and its species on it are constantly changing.

He also discovered the Galopogose islands.

WHO IS CHARLES DARWIN?

What was he given credit for?

Charles Darwin was given

credit for his theory of

evolution by natural selection,

through the evidence of

fossil records that show a

resemblance to modern species.

Details of the voyage

The voyage took 5 years.

Charles Darwin planned to

collect specimens off plants

and animals, which is how he

came up with Evolution.

Observations from the voyage

  • Species vary globally
  • Species vary locally
  • Species vary overtime
During the HMS Beagle Charles

Darwin made 3 observations.

Process of Natural Selection

Natural Selection is how a

species adopts to its new

environment by making

physical changes and how its

fitness is at its best in order to

stay alive in the survival of the

fittest.

Supporting Evidence of evolution

Fossil records- Ancient land mammal's fossil's have shown to have evolve into whales.

Common Ancestors- "Darwin Proposed that animals with similar structure evaded from a common ancestors with a basic version of that structure".

DNA structures- Shows on estimate in the time that two species have been evolving independently.

environmental effects on species overtime

Species are greatly effected by their environment. The animals can sometimes easily adapt to their new environment. In some cases they may not be able to adapt and become extinct. This is because the process of natural selection can occur fast enough in order for the animals to adapt to their rapidly changing environment. So eventually they die out.

The Different types of selection

Disruptive: This selection happens because individuals at the outer ends of the curves have higher fitness than the middle.

Stabilizing: This selection happens because when the center of the curve has higher fitness than the other ends.

Directional: This type of selection happens because the inner curve has a higher fitness than the center and outer curve.

Scientists who also contributed

Lyell: Showed how environmental changes changes different species.

Hutton: Introduced mechanism to science and inspired Darwin to look at mechanism of Natural selection.

Malthus: Economist that basically showed that only the ones who could adapt to environmental changes would survive.

Lamark: Zoologist who said that humans come from a lower level of species, which inspired Darwin's theory of Natural Selection
