What the flip is a flipped classroom?

“any teaching style that involves a majority of the lower level learning…to be completed at home before class, usually by watching video lectures, and students then do what is traditionally known as ‘homework’ in class the next day” (Bell, 2015, p. 9).

“at the most basic level, the flipped classroom involves moving the typical “transmission of knowledge” component of a class (i.e., lectures) to outside of the classroom and moving the ‘application of knowledge’ (i.e., homework) into the classroom” (Wilson, 2013, p.134)

Why do flip a class?

Emphasis on what is best for the kids.

Don't do technology for technology's sake

How to flip?

Be patient.

Be flexible.

Be willing to let go of "awesome ideas" if they end up being not awesome." (I tried teaching a song through only flipping... didn't work)

Get help from others.

Don't try too much all at once. You can flip one lesson or one unit, etc.

Playing tests

After they watch the video, they practice, and then submit a recording of themselves playing

Rehearsals

Less time teaching specific techniques to individual sections.

Many times I did stop rehearsal to teach just like before. But I'd always make a note that I should cover that again in the next video.

Do they dig it?

Hard time at first, but they got used to it.

Further research

Testing to see how well they learn. Possibly how far they get? Is time really saved? Are they learning better than before?
