A real heart has four chambers, two atria and two ventricles.

An artificial heart is made up of man made materials like titanium, plastic, and a material called 'Angloflex'

These artificial hearts use an internal battery that sends pulses of air to the artificial ventricles forcing out blood similar to a real heart.

More than 70,000 Americans die each year from heart failure.

Though many people are in need, only 2,000 people will be able to receive donor hearts

This artificial heart helps those who aren't able to receive heart donors, so they have a chance to live.

artificial heart patients have told the media that prior to surgery they were in more pain than when the artificial heart was in their body.

Even though there has been such a amazing breakthrough in technology, the heart is only temporary used until the patient can find a heart donor.

These hearts are typically used for patients with larger chests, but biomedical engineers are trying to expand their investigations and create a heart for smaller people.
