AQUEDUCTS

WHAT WAS IT USED FOR

  • To bring water to the city
  • Supplies water to public baths
  • Supplies water to fountains
  • Supplies water to latrines
  • Nine aqueduct brought 85 million gallons

WHAT AFFECT DID IT HAVE?

  • Kept the city healthy
  • Kept them well hydrated
  • Supplied "unlimited" water
  • The unlimited water came from mountain tops

HOW THEY MADE THEM

  • Built structures that slightly decreased from mt. tops
  • Usually included arches, and many of them
  • Took only about 5-10 years
  • Had to recruit many slaves
  • All blocks were hand chiseled

MATERIALS

  • 15 inch stone blocks
  • Stone, brick, or pozzoulana
  • Pozzoulana- a mixture of limestone and volcanic dust

FUN FACTS

  • Some were over 25 miles long
  • Had tunnels that were 4,200 feet
  • All tunnels were hand made
