Definition: The use of words that mean the opposite of what you really think especially in order to be funny.

Situational Irony

Situational irony occurs when the final outcome is contradictory to what was expected.

Examples Of Situational Irony

1-A child runs away from someone throwing a water balloon at him and falls into the pool.
2-A man who is a traffic cop gets his license suspended for unpaid parking tickets.
3-A vegan never eats meat but has some sausage pizza because he is hungry.
4-The police station gets robbed.
5-A pilot had a fear of heights.

Dramatic Irony

In literature, a plot device in which the audience’s or reader’s knowledge of events or individuals surpasses that of the characters.

Examples of Dramatic Irony

1-Two people are engaged to be married but the audience knows that the man is planning to run away with another woman.
2-In a scary movie, the character walks into a house and the audience knows the killer is in the house.
3- In Toy Story, the toys move when the people are not there. Also, Buzz thinks he is a real space ranger.

Examples of Dramatic Irony - 2

4- In a movie where a detective does not know that the criminal responsible for the crimes in the city is his partner.

5- The audience however is already aware of this fact and waits anxiously to know what will happen once the character finds out what they already know

Verbal Irony

Verbal irony is the use of words to mean something different from what a person actually says.

There are two types of verbal irony:


Overstatement – when a person exaggerates the character of something.

Understatement – when a person undermines the character of something.

Examples of Verbal Irony

1-The cake is as soft as concrete
2- Water is as clear as mud.
3- Looking at her son's messy room, Mom says, "Wow, you could win an award for cleanliness!"
4- Great! There will be an exam.
5- As sunny as day in winter in Alaska.
