R is for rumble The rumble is a big fighting event where the Socs and the Greasers fight. Normally everyone had a certain reason to fight but Ponyboy didn't have one, he saw fighting as pointless. Pony did fight though because he wanted payback towards the Socs for having a part in putting Johnny in the hospital.
S is for Stay Gold "Stay gold Ponyboy, stay gold." Johnny says this to Ponyboy right before he dies in the hospital bed. This means so much to Pony, Johnny is telling him to stay young, and innocent. See the good in the world even when it's evil.
T is for theme Ponyboy had trouble in his English class after Johnny and Dally died,he was failing so his teacher made him a deal. If he wrote a good enough theme he would pass Pony with a 'C' grade. This is why the book uses past tense continuously.
U is for upset Everybody in the gang, especially Ponyboy is upset when Johnny and Dallas die. What make Pony even more upset is that when he opens Gone with the wind, a note falls from Johnny. The note says to tell Dally to look at a sunset. Pony will never be able to do this.
V is for Vacuum Darry tells Pony that he is living inside of a vacuum. This is a figure of speech, it means he only pays attention to the problems, and bad things in his life and not the good, he doesn't pay attention to his surroundings.
W is for wallflower Ponyboy changed a lot from the beginning to the end of the story, at the beginning he was a solo guy, looking at sunsets, watching movies and reading books. At the end he really tarted getting into the gang and speaking up.
X is for xanthous Xanthous is a name for a yellowish/ gold color. Ponyboy turned gold as he watched two of his best friends die in front of his eyes. The words of Stay gold stuck in his head.
Y is for yond Yond means to be angry or furious, Dally felt these exact emotions when he saw Johnny die. Johnny was the only thing in the world that he cared about so when he died he couldn't take it and stormed out of the hospital, only ending up to killing himself.
Z is for zany At the beginning of the story Soda was a zany character. He always joked around, laughed and had a smile on his face. When Ponyboy left, he cried every night for a week. Soda was the one to make people laugh and lift there spirits. When Soda was feeling down, no one lifted him up. Soda and Pony took his problems for granted, like he didn't have any.
