NONFERROUS METALS

THESE TYPES OF METALS INCLUDE ALL EXCEPT IRON

ALUMINIUM

  • Lightweight and 1/2 the weight of metal.
  • Characteristics of aluminium gives it metal resistance to rust.
  • However aluminium can be corroded easily by alkalis they attack the Oxide layer.

MAGNESIUM

  • Magnesium is mainly used in alloy form.
  • It is the lightest of the structural metals.
  • Has one quarter less than other metals.

MAGNESIUM

  • Can be extruded, forged, rolled, and machined.
  • Best welded by GMAW for thin sections.

TITANIUM

  • Titanium is usually in alloy form.
  • Alloys are high strength light weight.
  • And one half the density of steel.
  • Titanium is a reactive metal.

ALPHA ALLOYS

  • Strength and oxidation resistants from 600°F to 1,100°F

BETA ALLOYS

  • Can contain vanadium, chromium, and Aluminium

BERYLLIUM ALLOYS

  • Is a high strength light weight metal. It is only about 2/3 as heavy as aluminium.

COPPER & COPPER ALLOYS

  • Copper is often used in nearly pure form for electrical and heat conductors
  • Other bronzes are formed by alloying copper with aluminium, silicon, or Beryllium.

NICKEL AND ALLOYS

  • A corrosion resistant metal.
  • Used as an alloying element as well as for plating other metals.

HOT TIP

  • The Statue of Liberty contains 179,000 pounds of copper.
  • When copper oxidises it forms a blue green self protective coating.
