WHAT IS A POPE?

  • The Bishop of Rome
  • Leader of the worldwide Catholic Church
  • Importance comes from role as the successor of Peter
  • Pope comes from the Latin word papa
  • Papa is a child's word for father in Latin

VICAR OF THE CHURCH

  • Vicar of Christ has had many meanings throughout history
  • Original meaning was "earthly representative of God"
  • Title is now used In reference to the bishops
  • Especially the Bishop of Rome
  • The Pope is God's representative on Earth

  • The line of bishops stretching back to the Apostles
  • The passing of power down through the Popes
  • Considered essential for orders and sacraments to be valid
