MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

A progressive, degenerative disease of the central nervous system

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)

  • It's a disease where your immune system attacks myelin
  • It disrupts communication between your brain and the rest of your body
  • Nerves start to deteriorate, this is irreversable.
  • MS patients usually loose the ability to walk correctly.
  • Occurs between the ages of 20-40

MS Diagnosis
-a neurological exam, which checks for reduced nerve function.
-an eye exam, which checks for distortions in the inner eye and response times.
-a spinal tap, a sample of spinal fluid is removed with a long needle and tested.

MS Treatment
There is no cure to multiple sclerosis.
Treatment mostly focuses on speeding up recovery from myelin attacks. This slows the progression of the disease.
Corticosteroids, plasma exchange, beta interferons, physical therapy, and muscle relaxants are all forms of treatments.

AUTISM

Developmental disorder characterized by extreme withdrawal and absorbtion in fantasy

Symptoms of Autism

  • Social challenges
  • Communication difficulties
  • Repetitive behaviors
  • Physical and mental issues that may accompany autism
  • Language disability

Autism Diagnosis
- We do not have medical tests that can diagnose autism.
-Specially trained physicians and psychologists administer autism-specific behavioral evaluations.
-The Modified Checklist of Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) is a list of informative questions about your child.
-The answers can indicate whether he or she should be further evaluated by a specialist such as a developmental pediatrician.

Autism Treatment
Studies have shown that early intensive behavioral intervention improves learning, communication and social skills in young children with autism. Intervention can involve behavioral treatments, medicines or both. Early behavioral intervention involves a child's entire family, working closely with a team of professionals. Different interventions and supports become appropriate as a child develops and acquires social and learning skills.
