SHEL SILVERSTEIN
He was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25, 1930.
Died due to a heart attack in Key West, Florida on May 10, 1999
When he turned 17, he was in the military, for the newspaper.
When he was in his early school, he wasn't the athlete.
He decided to draw and that became his passion.

CHILDHOOD
His mother, Helen Balkany, was a homemaker.
His father, Nathan Silverstein, was a bakery owner.
He was raised in Chicago but didn't stay for most of his life.
He later got shipped off to Japan for the military.
He only had one sister, Peggy Myers.

PERSONAL LIFE
Silverstein also had a son, Matthew Silverstein. He is still living and is married.
He had a daughter, Shoshanna Silverstein. She died at the age of twelve.
He married Susan Hastings, but died June 29, 1975.
Silverstein never remarried. But had a child with Sarah Spencer.
He was a Jew. He didn't really have a stable place where he lived.

INFLUENCE.
Silverstein wrote book and poems for children.
Since he wasn't the athlete he thought why not give drawing a try?
He wrote songs for many different composers.
He enjoyed writing articles, he knew he was good. So he decided to continue.

FACTS.
In his mid early life, Silverstein wrote jokes out of pornography.
Silverstein was in the military, for drawing pictures for the newspaper.
His books were never intended for children.
