FACTS ABOUT RHINOS

  • Many rhinos are killed for their horns
  • Black rhinos are currently endangered and only 4,000 are living
  • Rhinos are found in forests,deserts and grasslands in Africa
  • Scientists predict that in 2017 black rhinos will be extinct
  • Rhinos have very grasping upper lips that are used to rip off leaves and thin branches

RHINO CHARACTERISTICS

  • Small eyes
  • 1to 2 horns made of keratin(structural material making up outer layer of skin)
  • 3 toes
  • Biggest specie in the Rhinocerotidea family

RHINO ADAPTATIONS

  • Thick skin protects them
  • two keratin horns
  • Sense of smell and hearing to hunt for food
  • Strength - can charge at the speed of 35 miles per hour

  • Weight: Black rhino: 1 ton,White rhino: over 2 tons
  • Height:Black rhino: 1.75 meters,White rhino: 2.05 meters high
  • Length:White rhino:12.5-15 feet,Black rhino: 5605060560560 feet long
  • Black rhino is short tempered and is extremely aggressive
  • Black rhinos do not defend territories, but have home ranges in variable sizes
