WHO WAS HENSON

  • He was a great arctic explorer
  • He was born in Maryland, usa in 1886
  • He died in Maryland, usa in 1955
  • His skin was black
  • He was hired by the navy to go to the arctic with Robert PeAry
  • As young boy loved adventure.

WHAT DID HE DO?

  • He took 7 trips to reach the North Pole
  • At one point of the trek he fell in the arctic waters that were —15 degrees Celsius.
  • Robert peary's feet got injured from the harsh cold so Henson continued on and reached the North Pole first.
  • When he came back from his explorations he brought 6 inuit people to the usa
  • Since he was a black man, he wasn't recognized as being the first person to reach the North Pole.
  • Peary got the credit instead
  • Many years later he was finally recognized for this achievement

WHERE DID HE DO IT?

  • He explored the North Pole
  • He explored Greenland as well
  • His partner and himself met in a sewing shop
  • They started in New York City, then went to Canada by ship, then they went to Greenland by ship
  • They travelled to the North Pole by foot and dog sled

WHEN DID HE DO IT?

  • On April 6, 1909 they accomplished their goal to reach the North Pole
  • He started to come back to America on April 7, 1909
  • He tried to reach the North Pole many times from the years 1896 to 1902

WHY DID HE DO IT?

  • Many explorers tried to reach the North Pole but no one had ever succeeded before
  • He was a cabin boy when he was 12 on a ship
  • He wanted to be the first
  • He was working for Robert Peary as his assistant

WHAT TOOLS HELPED HIM?

  • He packed coal, lumber, canvas, sledges, tools, weapons, lamps and oil
  • Inuit people taught his crew how to drive a dog sled
  • Inuit guides were the main help in this cold climate

WHAT WAS HIS IMPACT ON THE WORLD?

  • Exploring the North Pole was cold and dangerous so the explorers became famous for reaching it and surviving
  • People knew more about Inuit people's way of life
  • They provided scientists with information about the climate and what life is like at the North pole
