Slavery Leads to War

Define Terms

  • Civil War = a war between citizens of the same country
  • US CW = War between North (Union) & South (Confederate) states
  • 1861 - 1865
  • Fought to preserve the Union; NOT to end slavery
  • 1.2 + million deaths

Causes of the War

  • States' Rights
  • Role of Federal Government
  • Preservation of the Union
  • Economy
  • ALL TIED TO THE INSTITUTION OF SLAVERY

"The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution African slavery as it exists amongst us, the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution.
[Our] foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition.” - Alexander Stephens, 1861

Source of the "Slave Problem" = The Constitution

  • Problem 1 = allowing slaves to count toward population
  • Problem 2 = federal law that fugitive slaves must be returned
  • Problem 3 = allowing slave trade to con. for 20 yrs. after ratification
  • Problem 4 = ignoring slavery's status in newly acquired territories
  • Failure to deal with the issue left the door open for future conflict

Dealing with the "Slave Problem"

  • Missouri Compromise
  • The Compromise of 1850
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854
  • The Wilmot Proviso
