Native American Arts

Introduction

  • Native American art traditions span many centuries.Native American arts have an extremely deep connection with spirituality and Mother Nature
  • Native American art: tattoo, painting, basket, carving, pottery, rug, craft.

Tattoo

  • Use objects such as sharpened bone or rock and carve the tattoo into the flesh
  • Tattoo signifying their conquest and victory.
  • Held mystical or spiritual meanings
  • Endow them with supernatural powers or strength

Sand Painting

  • Use crushed stone, flowers and other natural items from the desert to create their design on the ground
  • Sand paintings are paintings made by sprinkling dry sands colored with natural pigments onto a board.

Baskets

  • Different tribes used different materials, weaving techniques, basket shapes.
  • Make baskets from tightly coiled sumac or willow wood.
  • Basket was used for storing things: food, stuff...ect

Carving (totem pole)

  • Many Native American expressed themselves with their artwork carved into totem poles
  • Many times the story of a totem pole will be passed down from generation to generation

Pottery

  • Native American art pottery served both a functional and decorative purpose.
  • Pottery was used for storing such things as food, water
  • Also used for artistic expression and painted with beautiful designs and colors.

Rug

  • Navajor blankets and rugs are the most famous weavings in North America
  • Made by cotton and wool
  • These blankets were valuable and only the wealthy leaders could afford them

Craft

  • Used natural materials for their beads such as shells, wood, animal bones, animal horns, and silver.
