CARBOHYDRATES

  • Carbohydrates provide the body's most important source of energy.
  • Complex carbohydrates are found in vegetables, fruit, and grain.
  • Simple carbohydrates are found in sugary foods and soft drinks.
  • Too little carbohydrates result in low energy.
  • Too much of the simple carbohydrates cause obesity.

PROTEINS

  • Helps your body produce skin, muscle, and bone.
  • Found in meats, eggs, and nuts.
  • Too little causes bad development of bones and muscles, as well as skin problems.
  • Too much may contribute to weight gain.

FATS

  • Helps produce skin and hair, provides energy, and protects internal organs.
  • Can be found in almost all foods, but mostly in meat, fish, dairy products, and chocolate.
  • Too much fat can cause obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

MINERALS

  • Helps growth and regulates metabolism.
  • Found in almost all foods, but mainly vegetables, fruits, and grains.
  • Too few minerals can affect all body systems, while too many may be harmful.

VITAMINS

  • They produce energy and help regulate body processes.
  • Vitamins are found in all food groups, especially fruits and vegetables.
  • Not enough vitamins can result in diseases like scurvy, beriberi, and rickets.

WATER

  • Assists digestion and respiration and helps carry oxygen through your body.
  • Nearly all foods contain water, some are even 90%. Mainly beverages, vegetables and fruits.
  • Not enough water will result in death. Too much causes few problems.
