SENSORIMOTOR

Children Utilize Skills They Were Born With To Learn More About The Environment

SUBSTAGES OF SENSORIMOTOR

  • Reflexes (0-1 month)
  • Primary Circular Reactions (1-4 months)
  • Secondary Circular Reactions (4-8 months)
  • Coordination of Reactions (8-12 months)
  • Tertiary Curcular Reactions (12-18 months)

PREOPERATIONAL

Young children think about things symbolically. Develop memory and imagination and engage in make-believe. Ages 2-7. Very egocentric and only see things from their point of view.

CONCRETE OPERATIONAL

Children begin to think logically about concrete events. Thinking becomes more logical and organized. Realize ones thoughts and feelings are unique. Ages 7-11.

FORMAL OPERATIONAL

Abstract thought emerges. Teens begin to think more about moral, philosophical, ethical, social, and political issues that require theoretical and abstract reasoning. Use deductive logic from a general principle to specific information. Ages 12 and up.
